This study aimed to investigate the role of professional vocation in the occurrence of burn-out among public primary school teachers in Abidjan. Data were collected from a sample of 183 teachers, using a questionnaire and an interview. Multivariate analysis and content analysis of the interviews were used to elucidate the interactions between vocation and burn-out. The results, obtained using Pearson's chi-square (X²) statistical test, show that professional vocation influences the risk of burnout among public primary school teachers in the District of Abidjan. In other words, public primary school teachers who work as vocational teachers suffer less burnout than their counterparts who work as non-vocational teachers, and who are consequently prone to burnout. This suggests that professional vocation is a factor to be considered in the design of strategies to combat and prevent mental or psychological health at work, particularly burn-out.
Key words: vocation, burn-out, psychological health, involvement, teaching profession.
